Workshops for School Classes
New Workshops
Film Patronship
Curtain up for the film patrons! The film patrons school classes create their own presentations of a select competition film at one of its screenings at the festival. The preparation begins a few weeks beforehand at school. After viewing, discussion and film-analytical parts under professional guidance, the heart of the project begins with the creative preparation in small groups. Whether it’s specially designed posters, re-enacted scenes, further developed dialogues or character portraits, students have a great deal of freedom in their project work and can contribute their own talents and preferences. In this way, individual presentations are created that offer the film guests and the festival audience real added value to the enjoyment of the film, as well as enriching the pat:in class with a film-cultural experience.
Background information and timeline:
In consultation with teachers, the LUCAS team selects a suitable film for patronship at the end of the summer holidays. In addition to the age level, thematic and aesthetic references as well as current learning objectives are taken into account in the choice of film. The three subsequent workshops at the school are used to create the presentation, which accompanies the cinema showing at the end of the project in October.
Classics.Class
How does a film become a classic? This is the question that children and young people in the Classics.Class project ask themselves and examine works of film history that have influenced entire generations — whether thematically, dramaturgically or aesthetically. To coincide with the special exhibitions at the DFF, the Classics.Class takes a close look at a milestone in film history and presents the film and its results to the LUCAS audience.
Background information and timeline:
In consultation with their teachers, the LUCAS team selects a classic film in the spring as part of the DFF’s special exhibition for the school class. Accompanied by film educators, the school class prepares for the cinema screening at the festival on three workshop dates after the summer holidays.
Screen Talks
A screen talk offers the ideal opportunity to extend a visit to the cinema at LUCAS with an intensive film discussion with guests. In the undisturbed atmosphere of a workshop room and with the support of a film educator, the group can easily ask the filmmakers questions: Why was this camera perspective chosen, what idea is the script based on, what is the message behind the ending?
Background information and timeline:
In the run-up to the festival, teachers agree with the LUCAS team on a cinema screening followed by a screen talk. The duration of the talk is around 60–90 minutes.
Teacher Training

TRAINING: SHORTS FOR SCHOOLS
Monday, October 9 | 5 p.m. | DFF Cinema
On the occasion of the new BJF short film program, this training demonstrates the educational value of short films via the streaming platforms edupool Hessen and DFF Kino+. Short films bring a variety of topics to the point and can be used quickly and flexibly in the classroom to refresh school content with new impulses as well as to highlight film as an art form. Via edupool Hessen, the media library of the Hessische Medienzentren, short films can be selected and played according to relevance. The provision of the LUCAS competition short films via the streaming platform DFF Kino+ until December 23, 2023, enables an equally uncomplicated integration into the classroom. The use of short films in the classroom as well as the concrete use of the streaming platforms will be presented.
Attention: The LUCAS short film competition entries are only available for streaming within Germany.

Educational Material
For the films of the competitions »Kids« and »Teens«, experienced film educators compile educational materials that can be obtained free of charge by teachers and other interested parties and are sent digitally with each film registration by groups. The materials provide school classes and other groups with an introductory or in-depth study of the competition films, based on the standards of the DFF’s guiding principles for film education.
The educational materials for the films of the current festival edition will be available here (in German) from the beginning of September. The materials on films from previous editions can be found here.
Festival Reporters
Would you like to interview directors, cast and producers of children’s and youth films professionally, watch current films and get a taste of festival life? If you want to get up close to the filmmakers as a roving reporter, the »Festival Reporters« project is just the thing for you. A school class is accompanied by media educators through every step of the production process, from the elaborated shooting schedule to the finished report.
The teacher actively participates in the implementation of the project and supervises a production group after a full-day training. Afterwards, the finished report is broadcast via TV and livestream on Offener Kanal Rhein-Main and is also available at mediathek-hessen.de. »Festival Reporters« is a project of Medienprojektzentrums Offener Kanal (MOK) Rhein-Main in cooperation with LUCAS – International Festival for Young Film Lovers.
Background information and timeline:
The school class participating as »Festival Reporters« in the corresponding festival edition is selected via Medienprojektzentrum Offener Kanal (MOK) Rhein-Main. After a preparatory workshop, the group shoots their reports during the festival week.
LUCAS on Tour
LUCAS films go on tour, making it possible to participate in LUCAS year-round and far beyond the festival center in the metropolitan area, and to evaluate the festival program in a sustainable and far-reaching way. To this end, the team works closely with the DFF project FILMmobil (in German), which sends former competition films on the road and integrates them into exciting film education programs. Eschborn is also an important away game for LUCAS every year: the post-festival reading in front of students from the schools there — including film patronship projects — is traditionally an important part of the festival year.
